BSHS FIRST Robotics Team Earns Awards

The district’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 3044 recently received the Engineering Design Award during the FIRST Robotics Competition 2021 New York & Quebec Regional Awards Show. This award celebrates the team that demonstrates sound engineering in the design process of their Game Design.

Team mentor Lauren Brady was recognized as the New York & Quebec Region’s Woody Flowers Finalist.   Ms. Brady is an alumna of Ballston Spa High School and Team 3044.   She has been serving as a mentor for the team since she graduated.  The Woody Flowers Award celebrates effective communication in the art and science of engineering and design. The award recognizes an individual who has done an outstanding job of motivation through communication while also challenging students to be clear and succinct in their communications.

FIRST introduced new opportunities for FIRST Robotics Competition teams to participate in the 2021 season during the 2021 season kickoff.  In recognition of  ongoing challenges for teams with remote and hybrid learning, limited access to build spaces, tools, and robots, as well as the inability for teams to participate in in-person events the 2021 FRC season included a Game Design Challenge, Innovation Challenge presented by Qualcomm and/or INFINITE RECHARGE at Home Challenge.

FRC Team 3044, which met virtually until the spring when they were allowed to begin meeting in person, decided to participate in the Game Design Challenge.   The Game Design Challenge allowed registered teams to design their own FIRST Robotics Competition game using real-world, virtual, or hybrid design elements, and compete for judged awards. Winning concepts will be considered for use in future official games.

The Ballston Spa Central School District is able to offer opportunities in robotics to our High School students through the generous support of sponsors including Ballston Spa National Bank, Bechtel and Stewart’s Shops. Additional information can be found on the team’s website at or by visiting the FIRST Robotics website at, and/or contact Ballston Spa K-12 Science Coordinator Diane Irwin,, or at the High School by calling 884-7150.
