Clean Tech ECHS Hosts Business & Education Event
The Clean Technologies & Sustainable Industries Early College High program hosted a Business & Education Networking Breakfast on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 for corporate, educational and non-profit partners. Business & Education Breakfasts are held throughout the school year for partners to hear program updates, discuss workforce and education topics, and observe the program in action.
The event kicked-off with an announcement that the program will be adding a Cybersecurity pathway for students to enroll in. Current pathways include Entrepreneurship, Computer Information Systems, Clean Energy and Mechatronics. Program staff spoke about how business engagement opportunities allow students to relate what they are learning about in the classroom to the real world, develop transferable skills sought by employers and cultivate valuable relationships with businesses in need of talent. Staff also shared that during the 2017-2018 school year, 30 activities and events were organized for business partners to engage with students on projects and 20 business partners hosted students for field experiences to connect students to the workplace.
Ballston Spa Central School District Superintendent Ken Slentz shared his vision on the role business and industry can play in developing not only 21st century learning skills, but also reading and writing skills. Amber Mooney, Manager of Government Affairs, from The Business Council of New York State spoke about a new project to measure the impact of P-TECH and the Business Council’s experience hosting students for field experiences. Jim Fuschino, Operations Manager, from Momentive Performance Materials talked about the company’s involvement in the program and why they decided to partner. Momentive matched two students with Production Engineers over the summer for field experiences.
Following the breakfast, partners viewed students’ business ideas and projects that addressed infrastructure challenges, water quality, and more.
