P-TECH Students Complete Field Experiences
Field experiences provide students the opportunity to learn by doing real work and being productively engaged in the workplace. They may provide the opportunity to work in teams, rotate through a number of departments and job functions, or to work on a project of interest to the student (or group of students) and be a productive value for the employer partner. They are designed to give students hands-on experience in a field of interest, learn and practice occupational skills, and provide the opportunity to learn about their career options.
This summer 33 P-TECH students completed a field experience as part of the Clean Technologies & Sustainable Industries Early College High School. Some of the companies that hosted students this summer were Applied Robotics, the Honorable Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner’s office, Building Footprint USA, Cascade, Dreamer Media LLC, Latham Pools, Lifestyles of Saratoga, Miller Printing, Momentive, New York State Business Council, Passport for Good, Prolific Marketing and Worker Belle.
One student shared that he learned a lot from his time at Assemblywoman Woerner’s office, from parts of the legislative and judicial processes, how campaigns are run, the different programs and processes used to assist constituents and sort data.
A student who completed his field experience at Momentive shared that he learned a lot about how manufacturing processes work and how to schedule the processes to maximize efficiency. From his time at Momentive, he valued the experience of a typical work day, because he was able to better grasp what them manufacturing field is like in order to help him make informed career choices.
The student who completed his field experience at Applied Robotics was able to shadow the different positions and divisions of the company, such as engineering, sales, marketing, quality control, and assembly. He found that being able to experience a real work environment and learn about what it takes to be successful in various positions within a company. The student found it valuable to be able to see what an engineer does on a daily basis and that reassured him that is the field he wants to pursue.
Students in the P-TECH program have the opportunity to work with our business partners to experience the career pathway they are taking college coursework in.
