Community Groups Provide Support for Scotties BackPack Program
In collaboration with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, the district launched the Scotties BackPack Program at Milton Terrace Elementary School last spring and recently began the program at Gordon Creek Elementary School. The program provides a backpack of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food to selected students every Friday afternoon for him or her to eat throughout the weekend. The empty backpack is then returned to the school on Monday morning so that it can be filled again for the next Friday.
The Rotary Club of Ballston Spa recently provided the district with a $3,000 donation to help support the cost of participating in the regional program. Milton Terrace Elementary School will now be able to serve up to 40 students who have been selected to receive the weekly backpack for the remainder of the year. The Scotties BackPack Program at Milton Terrace is also being sponsored by Saratoga Hospital.
Gordon Creek Elementary School will now begin offering the BackPack Program to students after a $3,000 donation from Ballston Spa Elks Lodge 2619 was presented to the district at a recent Board of Education meeting. The backpacks for the 17 students selected to receive the nutritious food each week will be packed by volunteers from the Gordon Creek staff and members of the Elks Lodge. Additional information on the program is available on the Regional Food Bank’s webpage.
