Malta Avenue Robotics Team Places at FLL Tournament
Our High School’s FIRST Robotics Team #3044 and FIRST Tech Challenge Team #6945 recently hosted a Hudson Valley FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournament at the Ballston Spa Middle School. Nine FLL teams and six Jr. FLL teams participated in the regional tournament.
The first and second place overall winners were Brick2Brick from Queensbury Union Free SD and Malta Bots from Ballston Spa Central School District, respectively. These two teams both qualified to move on to the Championship Tournament at Duchess Community College on February 9, 2019.
Other awards and the teams that received them include:
- Robot Design (Bionic Builders, Ballston Spa Middle School)
- Project Award (Lake George Warriors, Lake George CSD)
- Core Values (Malta Bots, Malta Elementary School)
- Robot Performance (Malta Bots, Malta Elementary School)
The District fielded five FLL teams for the 2018 season thanks to the donations of corporate sponsors, including the Ballston Spa National Bank, Bechtel, Town of Malta/GlobalFoundries Community Foundation, CSArch, Union Fire Co of Ballston Spa, Technical Building Services, Ballston Spa Education Foundation. TCT Federal Credit Union and Malta BPA. Teams participating in the competition were from the Gordon Creek, Malta Avenue, and Wood Road Elementary Schools, as well as two teams from the Ballston Spa Middle School.
This year's FLL challenge, Into Orbit, requires students to design a LEGO robot that can be programmed to operate independently on the competition table and accomplish several space related tasks. The teams were judged based on the robot’s performance, design, core values and on a project that asked them to develop the innovation that will help earthlings get to Mars.
The tournament is funded by Hudson Valley FLL, Dutchess Community College, New York Tech Valley FIRST, IBM, and IEE. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest in science and technology. FIRST offers three levels of competitive challenges each year to youth around the globe.
