Chromebook UPDATE and First Days' Instructions

Dear Middle School Students and Families,

We hope this correspondence finds you all well and ready to return to learning. We will cover a few updates you all need to know moving into the new school year.

We are excited to share that our school is now able to provide a new Chromebook to each of our students. The use of the school device should help eliminate some of the technology struggles that arise with different software and other security programming needs. It will be expected that students use the school issued Chromebook during the instructional school hours and then are welcome to use their own devices in the evening if they wish. In addition to the chromebooks we will distribute course materials for students enrolled in three specific classes for the first quarter (Grade 6 & Grade 7 Technology and Grade 8 Earth Science). Please note that students will receive hard copies of their 2020-2021 class schedule at this time as well.

Also within this communication is information about student orientation for all middle school students to ensure they are ready for the remote learning environment, practice using their Chromebooks to access their various Schoology courses, and connect with their teachers.

Student Orientation (September 10th and 11th)

  • Secondary administration will post an introductory video for students and families to preview prior to students logging into the orientation classes.  The video will be linked on the school website starting the evening of September 8th
  • Students will virtually attend classes on Thursday or Friday based on their last name. The reason for the split over two days is to allow a smaller gathering within the Google Meet for students to gain comfort with the format and receive quicker assistance if needed.
  • Students will sign into Google Meets with each teacher at the start of their assigned period. The Google Meets platform can be accessed via the Scottie’s Dashboard. Each class will use a unique Nickname format based on the last name of the teacher followed by the period of the class on the student’s schedule. For example, if the student has math period 1 with Mrs. Cook then the student would select the join with the Nickname option and enter cookper1. If you are comfortable, please log into Schoology and onto each class to double check the Google Meet Nicknames; we have some teachers with duplicate last names and so the Google Meet Nickname will include the teachers’ first initial. Thus, in this case for example, if the student had social studies period 2 with Mr. Perrone the Nickname would be cperroneper2. (Please know that teachers are aware and prepared to assist redirection if a student logs into the wrong teacher’s meet).

  • The abbreviated period schedule for each orientation day is:

Students with last names A - J will attend Thursday, September 10th

Students with last names K - Z will attend Friday, September 11th

8:00 – 8:20 Period 1
