Teams Qualify for NYS Odyssey of the Mind Competition

Three Ballston Spa teams have qualified to move on to the New York State level Odyssey of The Mind competition at SUNY Binghamton in April. The Effective Detective team from Ballston Spa High School, the Gibberish or Not team from Ballston Spa Middle School and the Balsa Limbo team from the Malta Avenue Elementary School all completed this year’s regional event in first place and qualified to move on. In addition, the Milton Terrace/Wood Road Elementary School combined team won the coveted Omer Trophy at this year’s regional event.

Ten teams from the Ballston Spa Central School District recently participated in the Region 6 Odyssey of the Mind Competition hosted by the Queensbury Union Free School District. They joined over 300 students on 48 teams from 14 regional school districts who worked creatively and solved this year’s mind challenging problems and presented their solutions for judges, parents and supporters. The problems included Longshot Solution, Net Working, The Effective Detective, Balsa Limbo, Gibberish or Not and The Fashion Bug. On competition day, every team worked together to solve a secret spontaneous problem presented by the judges.  Their combined scores determined their final ranking and if they advanced to the New York State competition.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages. It encourages students to use their imaginations and work together in school teams to solve various challenges. Each team has an advisor or volunteer adult coach to help manage the team and prepare for the competition, arrange logistics and submit the entry forms. However, the students make all the decisions regarding costumes, props, and their approach to solving and performing the problems.

The Region 6 Odyssey of the Mind Tournament is coordinated by the WSWHE BOCES Enrichment Resource Center. Complete results from the Region 6 event are at, with additional information available at
