Middle School Art is offered for all students and they are taught by New York State certified art teachers. Students receive instruction based on New York State Standards for Media & Visual Arts. Students in 6th and 7th grade can look forward to a quarterly art class in which they will have the opportunity to create imaginative works over the course of 10 weeks. Students in 8th grade have the opportunity to take Studio in Art as their first high school credit where they will enjoy the art-making process for the entire school year.
Within each unit of study, opportunities are provided to:
- Develop the ability to think and act creatively by solving problems and by responding with originality, flexibility, fluency, and imagination.
- Develop skills such as self-reliance, motivation, team participation, self-discipline, and time management
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills such as analysis and expression
- Create exhibits of art works within the school and the community when possible
Art 6: 10 week course
The 6th Grade art curriculum focuses on developing students' abilities in inquiry, problem-solving, adapting, communicating and reflecting on their creative process. The goal of the Art Department is to develop open-minded learners, life-long thinkers, risk-takers that are responsible and become part of a productive community.Art 7: 10 week course
The 7th Grade art curriculum focuses on drawing, painting, ceramics/sculpture, art assessments and art critiques. The goal of the Art Department is to open-minded learners, life-long thinkers, risk-takers that are responsible and become part of a productive community.Studio in Art: 1 unit HS Credit Bearing-Full Year
Studio in Art is an introductory course that will allow students to explore and gain knowledge in a variety of different media throughout the school year. Basic principles, concepts, skills, and techniques will be introduced in preparation for the upcoming projects. Drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and graphic design are some of the topics that will be covered in the full year course. This course is REQUIRED for all students for a sequence in Art and is a prerequisite course to any other art course offered. In addition, it is also recommended for students who wish to begin their education with a general art experience.
