Home Schooling

 

Ballston Spa CSD is committed to the home school process, and we are here to help provide direction and answer your questions as you navigate the home schooling process while serving as your child’s primary educator. It is our privilege to work with you and your child(ren) and we look forward to supporting your family.

The following resources and documents are provided to help you with the home school process, necessary documentation and timelines, and templates for each step along the way. There is also a FAQ section and links to NYS home school guidance that you will find helpful. Ballston Spa residents who wish to home school must submit a letter of intent to home school, an Individual Home Instruction Plan (IHIP), quarterly reports, and annual evaluations. The District also asks that families fill out a Home School Information Form, which is also available below.

Requirements:

• The parent/guardian is required to notify the Office of Student Support Services in writing each school year of their intention to educate their child at home.  This may be sent via email homeschool@bscsd.org or via regular mail.
   
• The parent/guardian must develop an individualized home instruction plan (IHIP), including a timeline of dates that quarterly reports will be submitted.
   
• The parent/guardian must submit quarterly reports as scheduled on the IHIP timeline. 
   
• The parent/guardian must file an annual assessment indicating the student’s progress.

Upon successful completion of grade 12, home schooling parents or students may request a letter of substantial equivalency for the purpose of documenting substantial equivalency in the college application process. A high school diploma or a GED is not issued as a result of home school program completion.
