An eligible child is a child who resides within the Ballston Spa Central School District and who will be four years of age on or before December 1, 2026 (child's birth date falls between December 2, 2021 and December 1, 2022). A child who is age-eligible to attend kindergarten is not eligible for the UPK program.

The UPK program funding and instructional supports are administered through the Ballston Spa Central School District's Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Please contact UPK@bscsd.org or (518) 884-7195, Ext. 1374 with questions.

The UPK program is offered to families free of charge, regardless of income status.  The cost of additional services offered by the community based provider, such as before and after care, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

The UPK program follows the school district calendar, and classes run Monday through Friday. It does not operate in the summer months.

Yes.  This is a full-day, five days per week program.  

Transportation is not provided. Parents/guardians must transport their child to and from the UPK program.

No. The district does not have a first-come, first served registration list. In the event that we have more enrollments than spaces, placement is based on a lottery system.

The number of students selected in any given year is based on the availability of New York State funding. In the event there are more applicants than available spaces, student placements will be determined through the use of a random lottery process that will take place after the deadline for applications to be submitted has passed. Those not selected through the lottery process will be placed on a waiting list.

Yes.  All students who wish to receive UPK tuition coverage must enter, and be chosen through, the lottery.  If your child is currently attending one of our community-based sites, please be sure to indicate which site your child currently attends on your application.

All families who submit a complete application during the open enrollment period will be sent acceptance or waitlist letters via USPS mail after the enrollment period has closed.

Parents are provided the opportunity to indicate their preference regarding UPK sites, and the District makes efforts to match parent preference to placement determinations.  However, parents are not guaranteed placement at the site they prefer.

Although we encourage families to participate in the annual open enrollment for the best chance of securing a seat for September, we continue to accept UPK applications after the close of the lottery period. Families who register after the lottery has occurred will have fewer options for placement and may be placed on a waitlist for programming if all current spots have been filled.
