Educating Everyone Takes Everyone

Kindergarten screening and registration dates for Gordon Creek Elementary School, scheduled for May, is cancelled and will be rescheduled after the Ballston Spa schools re-open. Parents will be notified of new dates to visit the schools by mail. If you have a child who will be entering kindergarten this September and you have not been in touch with the BSCSD Registration Office, please call (518) 602-0256 to pre-enroll the student.
As some of you are aware, the Governor announced this afternoon (with a good deal of nuancing) that schools are to reopen in September under the rules set forth by the Departments of Health and Education. The Governor will monitor the data between now and then and if there is a spike in positive COVID 19 cases, he will change his decision.
We continue our work and planning for the reopening of schools in September. While we currently have a general plan in which all of the technical requirements from the Department of Health and the State Education Department are met, making this technical plan an operational plan for each of our schools will require additional work and additional information. For additional information, we are asking parents for your help in letting us know the intentions that each of you have for your child(ren) for the fall by completing a survey before August 10, 2020.
Please check the website regularly for information and updates on things you and your student should know about what is happening at Gordon Creek.
Classes resume Monday, September 14.
This year the Gordon Creek PTA will not be able to provide the school supply service that was offered in the past.
Gordon Creek Yearbook Update
We wanted to send an update regarding the status of the 2019-2020 yearbooks. Due to COVID-19 related production delays in the plant that our yearbooks are printing out of, Lifetouch has informed us that yearbooks may not ship until the end of August. We apologize for the extremely long delay and we will be updating everyone once we receive a more accurate shipping timeline from Lifetouch. Thank you so much for your patience.
Gordon Creek PTA
Lucas DeFabio passed away in early June after a lifelong battle with Menkes Disease, a copper transport deficiency due to mutation of the ATP7A gene. He was 11 years old and attended the Move Room at Gordon Creek Elementary. He loved his time there and his family greatly appreciates the efforts of the teachers, staff and administration to foster an inclusive supportive learning environment. In a recent note to school staff, Superintendent Ken Slentz expressed the district’s most sincere condolences to High School English teacher, Tina DeFabio and her family for the loss of their beautiful son, Lucas, who was, himself, truly a role model for all of us in how he approached life. Lucas was beloved by all. As one of the Move Room team members shared, “He was one of the most special kids I have ever met. Every day he brought us joy and happiness. Our classroom won't be the same without him.” His parents, Dan and Tina DeFabio as well as his brother Alex DeFabio (who attends Malta Avenue Elementary School) are postponing a memorial service until it is easier to travel and host safe social gatherings. At that point they will have a Celebration of Life ceremony. They have always been grateful to the support that their family has received in the Ballston Spa community. They indicated that for those who are inclined to donate in Lucas’ memory may contact https://themenkesfoundation.org/ or https://rmhcofalbany.org/.
