Spelling and Vocabulary - Greek and Latin Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots.
Spelling and Vocabulary skills and knowledge will be integrated into all of our content areas. Students will work each week in class on activities that will help them build fluency and understanding of spelling pattern and meaning."Many students are good 'decoders' - they know how to read a word by sounding out its parts. Often, their comprehension of the word's meaning isn't as strong. All of the research in the area of comprehensions agrees that a strong vocabulary is the foundation for reading comprehension. In fact, vocabulary is the foundation of all areas of literacy - listening, speaking, reading, and writing.Learning the meanings of Greek and Latin roots, as well as the spelling and meaning of the derivations (words that they are part of), will increase spelling, reading and writing abilities. Each week students will choose three activities from a "Choice Matrix" to develop their understandings of various Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes and roots. " (Trisha Callella, 2009) hey will also use activities that are based in a program called Quizlet. At the end of the week the students will take a short vocabulary quiz in that program.A knowledge of the meanings of the Greek and Latin components of words will help students learn how to break apart multisyllabic words to decipher their meaning. By doing so they will be able to infer the meanings of new words by relying on their knowledge of the Greek and Latin components. They will learn how to comprehend even unfamiliar multisyllabic words, not just decode them.
