All About Mrs. Lewis
I grew up in the local area along with my mom, dad, and two sisters. My one sister, Jessica, is four years younger than I am while my sister Darcy is six minutes older than me. That's right...I am a twin! Although Darcy and I look similar, we are fraternal twins. Jessica works for the DEC in the field of Environmental Science and Biology while Darcy is a reading grade teacher in Virginia. My parents and some of my relatives live in the Rotterdam/Schenectady area, which is where I spent my early childhood years. I later moved to Saratoga to attend high school and graduated from Saratoga Springs High School.
As an undergraduate, I braved the cold winters of the North as a student at Plattsburgh State University. During my time at SUNY Plattsburgh, I majored in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and I minored in Science. I participated in campus activities including Student Government, Delta Phi Epsilon National Sorrority, Kickline Dance Team, and the Cheerleading Squad. Upon graduating from SUNY, I entered the teaching world first as a substitute teacher. I gained experience in a variety of grade levels and classroom settings, working mostly right here in BSCSD!
Needing to escape the cold winters in NY (I was not yet a skier or snowboarder back then), I went on to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to complete my graduate work. While enjoying the breathtaking scenery, the rich culture, and the numerous outdoor activity opportunities, I received my Masters Degree in the field of Special Education. I spent several years teaching in Hawaii, working first as a 4-6 grade teacher and then as an early interventionist at the pre-K level.
Missing friends, family, and (believe it or not) the changing seasons, I returned to New York and began teaching here at Malta Avenue back in 2000. My first position at Malta Ave. was in a "looping class" where I taught students for both the third and fourth grades, spending two years at a stretch with my class. I completed two full "loops" before deciding that, with the fascinating curriculum focus on New York State History, I wanted to remain at the fourth grade level for a while. Although I loved spending a number of years as a fourth grade teacher, I had a wonderful experience when I made the move to the second grade since early childhood education has always been my passion!
In my free time, I enjoy outdoor activities such as bicycling, downhill and cross country skiing, walking and hiking. My biggest passion, however is READING! Whether it be fiction, nonfiction, a magazine article or the newspaper...I can't get enough of words! I love writing almost as much as I do reading! My hobbies also include attending the theater, motorcycling, cooking (although I could definitely use a few tips in the kitchen!) listening to music, and taking in all of the history, activities, and excitement that Capital District Region has to offer along with my family and friends.
At home, I love spending time with my family. The Lewis household includes my twin toddler sons, Samuel and August, who we call "Sam" and "Gus" for short. It is so much fun to see them grow and change by the day! I also have two dogs, Duke (a German short-haired pointer) and Daisy (an Australian cattle dog) who love going on long walks, playing catch, and showing off the tricks that they know. I also love visiting with my niece Harper, who is 2 and my nephews which include Jackson (a third grader) as well as Shawn and Cody (who are both middle school students). While Harper and Jackson live close by, Shawn and Cody live in Virginia so I wish we got to see one another more often that a few times a year.
I can't wait to learn all about you! I look forward to working together with both you and your family to create a successful second grade experience for all of us.
