    Our year begins with America's movement west after the Civil War.  While the South is undergoing reconstruction, people are moving west in large numbers to take advantage of new job opportunities and available land to settle on.  The building of the transcontinental railroad helps fulfill the American goal of manifest destiny as the United States now will truly span from sea to shining sea.
