    Highlights from the Sports World of Ballston Spa

    Congratulations to our fall athletes who were recognized for their accomplishments at the December 5th board meeting.

    Girls Varsity Soccer -
    Congratulations to freshman Laila Cowsette and senior Caitlin Wania who were recognized at the Section 2 Girls’ Soccer Banquet yesterday in Albany.  Laila was recognized as a Suburban Council 2nd Team All Star with this being her first year on the varsity squad.  Caitlin earned multiple recognitions with a third Suburban Council 1st Team All Star, a Section 2 Class A All Star, and was named to the 4th Team Class A New York All State Team.  Caitlin is a five year veteran of the Ballston Spa Girls’ Varsity Soccer team scoring a total of 37 goals and assisted 16 goals throughout her high school career.  She will be playing D1 soccer next fall at Siena College.

    Student-Athlete Highlights -It came down to penalty kicks after both teams put one in during regulation. Caitlin Wania put the tally on the board for the Scottie’s. After two ten minute overtime and two five minute sudden death periods, it came down to penalties with the Scottie’s moving on after going 4 for 4 and Scotia went 3 for 5.

    Student-Athlete Highlights -Ballston Spa visited Averill Park today, October 19th, for a quarter final sectional game. In the first 15 minutes, Averill Park scored with a goal by Biewlawski. In the last 5 minutes of the first half, Christian Toma scored for Ballston to tie the game 1-1. In the second half, Ethan Cook scored from a penalty kick to put Ballston up 2-1. Averill Park came back with a goal by Ghent to tie the game 2-2. Cook scored again from a penalty kick put Ballston up 3-2. Final score 3-2 Ballston. They will advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday.

    Varsity Boys Soccer - Troy at Ballston Spa Wed. 10/17 -

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Troy visited Ballston Spa for the first round of sectionals on Wednesday afternoon, October 17th. Troy’s Stinson scored in the first 10 minutes of play. BSpa’s Ethan Waters scored two goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half, assisted by Liam O’Connell and Michael Robyck.  In the second half, BSpa put two more points on the board, with goals by Ian DeFilippis and Michael Robyck, assisted by Devin Duttine. Final score 4-2, Ballston Spa.

    Student-Athlete HighlightsThe Ballston Spa Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to the home of the Bisons where they faced an undefeated Shaker squad.  The Scottie’s were quick to take control of the game pressuring the Bison defense from the start.  Maddy Barnum put the first tally on the board  with a 25 yard shot that slipped under the crossbar and over the keeper’s hands to make it 1-0.  The second goal of the game started with a far post cross that Sarah Rule was able to save from going over the end line.  She then found Lily Urban who put the ball near post and increased the lead to two.  The second half saw a shift in momentum with Shaker controlling the play and eventually earning their only goal of the game.  The Bison had another scoring chance late in the second half but the opportunity was shut down thanks to the efforts of Laila Cowsette and Morgan MillerCaitlin Wania would seal the deal though with an upper ninety rip assisted by Jordyn Ostrander to make the final score 3-1.  The Scottie’s improve their league record to 6-3-1,  8-3-1 overall.

    Varsity Girls Soccer - Columbia at Ballston Spa - Thurs. 9/27 -

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Ballston Spa took control of the game as soon as the whistle blew.  Opening up the scoring for the Scottie’s was Maddy Barnum, followed by Caitlin Wania, and Lily Urban.  Assisting the goals were Caitlin Wania and Sarah Rule.  The Scottie’s defense of Morgan Miller, Laila Cowsette, Alison Sgambati, Samantha DeVito and keeper Shay Andress once again stepped up to keep Columbia’s attack at bay.  It would be Sam Brook #16 to get the goal for Columbia with two minutes left in the game to make it 3-1.  Bspa’s Jordyn Ostrander, Madelynn Barnum and Mikayla Kelley made the difference in the midfield to keep the Scottie’s on the attack for much of the game.  The Scottie’s improve to 5-3-1 league and 7-3-1 overall.

    Student-Athlete Highlights -Guilderland visited Bspa today September 22nd. Griffen Leggieri scored the first goal for BSpa, assisted by Jeffery Matthews. For the remaining 30 minutes of the first half, Guilderland couldn’t get a goal off. To start the second half, Guilderland’s Friquietto scored. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the regular play. In overtime, Guilderland’s Tynan scored on a corner kick to finish the game 2-1 Guilderland.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Three minutes and twenty five seconds into the match was all that it took for Ballston Spa to get the go ahead goal and what would end up being the game winner. Maddy Barnum played Jordyn Ostrander who beat two Guilderland defenders before tucking the ball away to make it 1-0.  A short time later, Mikayla Kelley’s pressure on the keeper paid off when she won a tackle in the box with Sarah Sierzenga picking up the ball on the outside and then finding the back corner to make it 2-0.  Guilderland pressured the Scottie’s hard the first half with their best chance occurring late in the first on a breakaway through the Scottie’s defense that  was stopped by Laila Cowsette.  In the second half, it would be Bspa defender Ali Sgambati with a goal line save then grabbed by keeper Shay Andress to keep Guilderland off the scoreboard.  The Scottie’s improve to 4-3-1 league and 6-3-1 overall.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Sarah Rule opened up the Scottie’s scoring after intercepting a pass from the Albany keeper and put it in the net 12 minutes into the game. Mikayla Kelly notched the second goal after she ran through a tackle in front of the net. Caitlin Wania’s driving header from a Sarah Sierzenga cross tacked on goal number three to finish the half. Jordyn Ostrander needed only a minute into the second half and a Sarah Rule cross in order to put the Scottie’s up 4-0. Sarah Sierzenga drove home goal number five from just outside the box. Ostrander would find the net again for goal number six off of an Ali Sgambati cross and Maddy Barnum finished off the scoring for the evening with a 35 yard rip just over the keeper’s head. The Albany goalie recorded 14 saves while Bspa’s Gia Burdick recorded 1. Turning in excellent games for the Scottie’s were Maddy Barnum, Caitlin Wania, and Morgan Miller whose control of the defense led to several offside calls and the shut out.

    Students-Athlete Highights - Saturday September 15, Bethlehem boys varsity soccer team, ranked #2 in NYS, visited Ballston Spa. Liam O’Connell scored a laser shot from 25 yards out to put BSpa on the board within the first five minutes, assisted by Jeffery Matthews. Bethlehem pressed hard for the remaining 75 minutes, but the Scotties held their ground and Bethlehem was unable put one in.  Final score: 1-0 BSpa.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - The Burnt Hills Boys Varsity soccer team visited Ballston Spa. The score was 0-0 until the last minute of the game when Jeff Matthews scored assisted by Mikey Robyck. Final score 1-0 Ballston Spa taking the win.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Sarah Sierzenga put Ballston Spa on the scoreboard first with a shot to the corner and an assist from Jordyn Ostrander.  BHBL was quick to fire back scoring off a free kick outside of the box.  Then it was Sierzenga for the assist lofting a ball to a determined Sarah Rule who challenged the BHBL defender and goalie in the air to knock the ball into the net making it 2-1.  Maddy Barnum kept up the pressure against the Spartans with her control in the midfield as she held possession and found outlets to Caitlin Wania and Sierzenga.  Keeper Shaylee Andress came up huge for Scotties coming off her line to stopping BHBL’s James on a breakaway.  Finishing off the first half scoring would be Caitlin Wania, fed by Jordyn Ostrander for her second assist of the game.  The second half saw a more determined BHBL team testing the Scotties defense of Morgan Miller, Laila Cowsette, Ali Sgambati, Sammy DeVito, and keeper Andress who held strong fending off multiple long ball attempts.  After several corners by the Spartans, it was Sierzenga clearing header that gave the Scotties the moments to finish of the game.  Both teams would add a tally to the board with Caitlin Wania scoring her second goal of the match to make the final score 4-2.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - The JV boys soccer team defeated CBA by a score of 3-1. Matt King had two goals, and Adam Amami had one also. Wyqie Aguda recorded two assists, and Ryan Nagengast had one. The team’s record is now 5-3.

    Varsity Girls Soccer - Saratoga at Ballston Spa Wed. 9/5 -

    Student-Athlete Highlights - The Ballston Spa Scottie’s hosted the Saratoga Blue Streaks in a match that took a full one hundred minutes to determine the outcome.  Regulation ended 0-0 and both sides found the net to make it 1-1 final after twenty minutes of overtime.  Saratoga earned the go ahead goal in the first overtime. The Scottie’s #11 Caitlin Wania found #27 Sammy DeVito for the equalizer with a minute and a half left in the game.  Both sides saw multiple opportunities to pull ahead throughout the game but it would be Saratoga who had the best chance in the first half with a breakaway that was narrowly saved by a determined Shay Andress to keep the score level at zero 


    Varisty Girls Soccer - Ballston Spa at the Scott J. Retersdorf Memorial Tournament, Gloversville -

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Participating in the fourth annual Scott J. Retersdorf Memorial Tournament, the Ballston Spa Scottie’s took on the Northville Falcons at Gloversville High School.  The Scottie’s took the game 4-1 with Bspa goals from Sarah Rule, Maddy Barnum, Sarah Sierzenga, and Gabriella Payant assisted by Sarah Sierzenga, Jordyn Ostrander, Lily Urban and Sarah Rule.  The Northville goal came from Julia Moore on a penalty kick

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Niskayuna visited Ballston Spa on a hot, sunny Tuesday afternoon. Jeff Matthews scored for BSpa, assisted by Ethan Cook, in the first two minutes of play.  But BSpa wasn’t able to put another point on the board and Niskayuna came away with a 5-1 win, with a hat trick by Ozisik, and goals by Mesbahi and Viggiano.

    Student-Athlete Highlights -Whitesboro visited Ballston Spa today, September 1st. Whitesboro scored 2 goals in the first half by Stuhlman and Gorgas. Ballston scored 1 goal by Ethan Waters. In the second half Whitesboro scored with a goal by Williams. Final score 3-1 Whitesboro.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - Utica- Proctor visited Ballston Spa today, August 31st. The first goal was scored by Utica-Proctors Somow. Ballston came back with a goal by Brayden Box assisted by Ethan Waters to tie it 1-1. In the second half Ethan Cook scored to make it 2-1. Final score 2-1 Ballston.

    Student-Athlete Highlights - The Ballston Spa girls varsity soccer team traveled to Troy this morning winning the opening of league play 2-0.  The Scotties outshot the Flying Horses 14-1.  The first Ballston Spa goal came from a Sammy DeVito cross finished by Maddy Barnum.  Immediately after, it would be DeVito on the finishing end of an Ali Sgambati cross to complete the scoring with two in favor of the Scotties.  A solid effort from the Scotties defense to keep Troy scoreless consisting of Morgan Miller, Laila Cowsette, Ali Sgambati, Kristen Lewza, and keeper Shay Andress who had a final minute save to hold onto the shutout.

The final score was 7-0 Ballston, with goals by Devin Duttine, Adrian Jaruga, Jeff Matthews (2), Nicholas Savoia, Ethan Waters, and Justin Waters

    Student Athlete Highlights - The JV Boys soccer team defeated Troy 10-0. Wyqie Aguda scored 4 goals, and Josh Loucks, Ivan Wang, Demetri Yerou, Kasey Knickerbocker, and John Buckley also tallied goals.
