  • We will explore a variety of historical events as they relate to New York State

     

    Overview of Fourth Grade Content

     

    Ancient Native Americans-The first Native Americans arrive in the New York area 11,500 years. We will look at how and why they settled in New York State.

     

    Native Americans-1400-1600's. We will focus our attention on specific tribes that flourished in our area.  This will include the Algonkian and Iroquois. We will explore various aspects of their life including, shelter, food, clothing, beliefs and religious celebrations, and daily life.

     

    The Exploration of the west hemisphere during the Age of Discovery- We will focus on Christopher Columbus, Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain, Giovanni de Verranzano, and Henry Hudson.

     

    Colonial America-We will look at early and later Colonial America period. We will look at food, shelter, clothing, religion, jobs, and daily life, of the various people who lived in the New York area.

     

    Revolutionary War-We will focus on some major events leading up to the Revolutionary War like for example the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea party.  We will also look at the battle of Lexington and Concord, the Declaration of Independence, Battle of Saratoga, and the final battle at Yorktown.

     

    A New Nation-We will look at how our Constitution was created.  We will look at the branches of government and the concept of checks and balances.

     

    Westward Expansion-The Erie Canal. Finally, we will look at westward expansion in relation to New York State. The canal is a perfect example of this.  We will discover how and why this was created and how it impacted our state.
