Educating Everyone Takes Everyone

  • Community Clean Up Day

On Saturday, June 1, students, families, teachers, and community members took some time out of their day to help clean up the nature trail behind the school and make space for an outdoor classroom. The classroom will allow students more authentic hands-on learning experiences and exposure to nature. “Recent studies show that exposure to nature significantly benefits mental health, academic achievement, physical health, and overall student well-being,” said Andrew Ferrone, second-grade teacher. Students from Wood Road's Penny Harvest Roundtable presented a check to a representative from the MIOP Foundation during a School Pride Day Ceremony. The foundation supports families affected by malignant infantile osteopetrosis. • Calling all Volunteers!

Did you know that there are nature trails behind the Ballston Spa Elementary School complex? There are, but they need a little work and we want to make them better than ever by adding an outdoor classroom. That is why we are hosting a community work party on June 1st from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Families are invited to join us for a morning of work followed by a free barbeque and shaved ice.

Where? The Nature Trails behind Wood Road Elementary School. (Park in the Wood Road or Gordon Creek parking lot and walk around back)

When? Saturday, June 1st. Work starts at 9 a.m. BBQ is at 11/11:30. (Please don't arrive at 11 a.m. and expect to eat)

What: Spreading woodchips, clearing trails, removing invasive species, placing bird houses, hanging trail markers, placing picnic tables, removing trash.

Supplies: We will have several shovels, clippers, wheelbarrows, and rakes. If you are able to bring any of your own supplies from home, that would be great, but not necessary.

Reminder - Dress for work in the woods (long pants, work gloves, dirty shoes/boots, etc), bring water, and label any tools (no power equipment).

All student volunteers must be accompanied by an adult.

If you have additional questions, contact Andrew Ferrone at aferrone@bscsd.org.
