Engineering & Technology

  • The Engineering and Technology Department at Ballston Spa High School is committed to introducing students to basic concepts in technology and engineering through diverse course offerings.  Students have the opportunity to pursue course work in the construction field, engineering, manufacturing, communication and computer science.  Students have the opportunity to apply the concepts they learn in math and science to solve design problems.  The offerings help students develop the technical, intellectual, collaborative and innovative skills required to be successful in the STEM fields.  The engineering and technology education curriculum has been developed to be an action-based program that allows students to develop, produce, use, and assess the impacts of products and services.  Students can complete projects in a range of areas such as graphics, digital videos, game design, woodworking, and metal working.   The Engineering and Technology Department at Ballston Spa High School participates in a partnership with Project Lead the Way (PLTW) to offer a four year sequence of courses that introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) College Credit for PLTW Pre-engineering Courses

    • Students that have at least an 85 overall average and earn at least a 6 stanine score on the PLTW end of course assessment will be eligible to apply for college credit from RIT.

    • RIT will translate the stanine scores into letter grades:  a stanine of 6 will equal a C; a 7 will equal a B; and 8 and 9 will be an A.  Only the PLTW end of course assessment (stanine) score will be used by RIT to determine the letter grade for the college credit.

    • The final exam grade printed on the report cards is a local exam grade and is not the score on the PLTW end of course assessment used to determine eligibility for college credit.

    • An email will be sent to the email address listed  in SchoolTool in  early July to students that are eligible for college credit with information on how to apply for college credit.
