CERTIFICATION OF TEACHING ASSISTANTS

On January 8th, 2002 President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The NCLB legislation ensures that all students receive a high quality education. Deputy Secretary of Education Ray Simon stated in 2005, "No Child Left Behind is built upon a promise: all children deserve the opportunity to learn from a highly qualified teacher. The law states that all teachers and paraprofessionals must be highly qualified".

According to the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, Section 80-5.6: "A teaching assistant is appointed by a board of education to provide, under the general supervision of a licensed or certified teacher, direct instructional service to students " . The teaching assistant is provided "general" (as contrasted with direct or personal) supervision by the certified teacher(s) who are responsible for the student's instruction.

All Teaching Assistants employed by the Ballston Spa Central School District are certified by the State of New York. As a direct result of the NCLB legislation teaching assistants in New York State hired on or after February 2, 2004 must meet newly updated requirements.

Please refer to the websites below for detailed information about certification requirements, preparation for the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (ATAS), and other detailed information regarding  NCLB .
