District Wellness Policy
The
Board of Education approved a new Wellness Policy in the Fall of 2006 in
compliance with the federal WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. It is based on
research that points to declining nutritional intake, increasing sedentary
lifestyles and increasing obesity in our children. This Act states “each
school district participating in the National School Lunch Program must
adopt local school wellness policies that address healthy eating and
physical activity by September 2006”. Our state leaders are also
introducing legislation that will mandate comprehensive guidelines relating
to food in the schools via a “Healthy Schools Act” in the coming year.
Each
one of our five schools has developed a “Healthy School Team” and has worked
in conjunction with the “District Health Advisory Team” to develop the BSCSD
Wellness Policy. The policy addresses such issues as healthier snacks in
cafeterias and vending machines, healthier fundraisers that promote
children’s health, classroom parties that include healthy food items or
non-food items and opportunities for more physical activities that promote
an active, healthier lifestyle.
The district is working
toward educating the community and implementing the many facets of the
Wellness Policy in several stages. Please help us move forward, showing our
children how to make lifestyle changes. There are many ways to celebrate
occasions with healthy food – or even no food at all. Together we can make a
difference. Thank you for your support and please discuss any concerns or
questions with the Healthy School Teams, school leadership or health care
professionals.
