CLUB/ACTIVITY

DESCRIPTION GOAL/PURPOSE

Art Club

The Art Club is an opportunity for Middle School students to build on their existing creative interests by participating in activities that promote school and community spirit.  Advisor:  Mrs. Guernsey
 

History/Civic Club

The history/civic club was formed to give students who enjoy history and civics a place to express their interests. The club plans and participates in activities that help enhance the importance of national holidays as well as bring attention to important historical events. Students also have the opportunity to discuss topics of interest and work on historical projects for local competitions. Advisors:  Mrs. Mastan and Mr. Mazierski
Jazz Band

The Ballston Spa Middle School Jazz Band is directed By Mr. Crispin Catricala. It meets every Tuesday night from 5pm-6: 30 pm and consists of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The objective with this ensemble is to practice and perform jazz music and the techniques found within that genre. Improvisation will be discussed and explored in addition to the historical significance of jazz music in our culture and it’s effect around the world. Students will be expected to be at all rehearsals and performances through out the year. Annual auditions for all members occur with in the first few weeks of each school year. Launching Pad Launching Pad is the Middle School drama program. Members of this club will learn many different facets of theater: from set building, lighting, acting, singing, sound, etc. Our goal is to allow students to learn as much as possible about theater and to help prepare them for future performances on stage.   Advisors:  Mr. Catricala, Mr. Lopez, and Mr. Shaver

National Junior Honor Society

The goal of the club is to help students continue to grow in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character. Service activities are provided by members for the school and community.  Members are expected to listen for an announcement concerning meeting times.  Membership applications for new members are available in January.  See Ms. Carter and Mrs. Sherman-Cook for more info.
Odin's Gift Odin's Gift is the Middle School Literary Magazine. The club will produce a magazine of student poetry, short story writing, and artwork. Students judge submissions that are accepted all year long and help to format the magazine. Odin's Gift will be available at a coffeehouse style in the Spring.  Copies of last year's magazine are available now in the main office.  Advisor:  Mr. Shaver

Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Meetings will start in November and will be held on Wednesdays. Regional competition is in early March. Advisors: Mr. Lopez and Mr. Mazierski 
Respect Club Students will learn approaches for encouraging respect and teamwork among all students and staff. Students will also participate in planning and implementing school wide events which enhance the school experience for all students. The Respect Club organizes "Mix it Up at Lunch Day", Random Acts of Kindness Days, The Wall of Appreciation and a Martin Luther King Day project, along with other yearly events. Students from all middle school grade levels are welcome to join at any time during the year . See Mrs. Wichrowski or Mrs. Jones for more info. Meetings are held in Room 401 every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.

SADD Club

This activity involves using positive peer pressure to encourage students to make healthful choices in their daily routines.  Meetings will be held on  Thursdays in Room 307.  See  Mrs. Grisanti for more info.
Science Bowl This group of 7th and 8th graders meets weekly to practice science and math competition questions and to build a hydrogen powered vehicle that will be raced in a competition in March.  On that day, students will also compete in a Jeopardy style competition of science and math questions against other middles school teams.  Advisor:   Mrs. Wohl

Science Olympiads

The purpose of the group is to improve the quality of science education and increase student interest in science.   Students compete in groups on events in all branches of science.  Advisors:  Mrs. Cleary and Mr. Hoag

Service Club

Students participate in service related activities within the school and community. Meetings are held on the  1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month as needed. See Mrs. Cook or Mrs. Wohl for more information.

Ski Club 

Students take a bus to Willard Mt.    Sign ups will be held in the beginning of November.  See Mr. McNulty or Mr. Noonan for more info.

Cross country ski club meets after school when weather permits.  More info. available in winter.

Student Council

Student council is the student government for all Middle School clubs and activities.  Students from each team at each grade level are elected by their peers in mid-October.   Meeting times will vary, listen to announcements for dates and times.  See Ms. Brotsis or Mrs. Fountain for more info.

Yearbook

 

Students are responsible for producing the yearbook.  The staff is responsible for the total layout of the yearbook.   Meetings are held as needed for the publication.  Listen for daily announcements for dates and times.  See Mrs. Mastan or Mrs. Summersell for more information.
