The Ballston Spa Central School District
is in Saratoga County, NY
approximately 7 miles south of Saratoga
Springs, 30 miles north of Albany,
strategically located between New York City and Montreal, Canada, Syracuse,
NY
and Boston, MA. The public school district was formed from a union free school
district and later added a whole
or parts of 14 common school districts.

A diverse socioeconomic population
resides within the suburban district of an estimated 20,000 residents in a 60
square mile area, which includes the residents of the
Village
of Ballston Spa and portions of the Towns of
Ballston,
Charlton, Malta
and Milton.
Employment opportunities for residents
of the school district include General Foods, Quad Graphics,
ReserveAmerica,
State Farm Insurance,
Stewart's, and Ballston Spa National
Bank. The
Lockheed
Martin Company
operates the Kesselring Site at West Milton and the
Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in
Niskayuna for the US
Department of Energy. Other nearby operations include the GE
Research and Development Center
in Schenectady.
The Ballston
Spa School District is a major employer of local residents as are government
services at the County,
State and Federal levels within the Tri-city
(Albany-Schenectady-Troy) area.

approximately 15 churches,
a public library,
a regional lending library, and an area
community center. Access is convenient to the Saratoga Performing Arts
Center, Yaddo, the Saratoga Spa State
Park and Recreation
Center, the Saratoga Race
Tracks, and the Malta Speedway. Nearby transportation accesses
are Route 87 (the
Adirondack Northway, exit 12), the New York State Thruway, Albany International
Airport and the
Saratoga and Schenectady county airports.
Student enrollments include approximately
4390 students in grades preschool through grade 12, with an estimated
1250
students in grades 9-12 during the 2001-02 school year. In September, 1998 a new
High School opened with
state-of-the-art computer and science labs, a modern
library media center, auditorium and swimming pool. More than
600 educators and
support staff make up the District's dedicated team of employees.

The Ballston Spa High School offers a
comprehensive program of studies leading to a Ballston Spa High School
Diploma
with sequences available in Art, Business, English, Family and Consumer
Sciences, Fine Arts, French,
Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Studies,
Spanish, Technology/Engineering, and
BOCES
(Board of Cooperative
Educational Services) for various vocational programs. New
York State is phasing in new standards for graduation,
so more challenging
requirements are being added each year. The requirements below apply to the
Class of 2002.
Diplomas for the graduates of 2002 will be endorsed with a New
York State Regents seal upon completion of the
New York State Regents
examinations in:
All graduates must satisfactorily complete New York State
Regents exams in:
Accreditation: New York State Board of Regents
Credit: One unit of credit is granted for satisfactory
completion of courses which meet 60 minutes per day, three or
four times per
week, 108 times per year. All Regents level science courses meet an additional 2
periods per week.
Students receive 1 credit for full year courses, and one half
credit for semester courses. All students must enroll in
Physical Education
courses. BOCES classes are held at the local
Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex
Counties Center in Saratoga Springs
for a comparable 5 periods per day at four credits per year. Students are
required to earn 20.5 credits for a school diploma or 22 credits for a Regents
diploma.

Grading: The instructional program is designed to accommodate
each student by recognizing individual levels of
achievement and helping
students move forward from that point a rate their capabilities, effort,
involvement, and
interest allow. The achievement grade is based at the level of
thinking and level of work produced in fulfilling the
course requirements.
Numeric grades are reported each quarter and final grades for each course are
determined by
averaging the marks received at the close of each 10-week period
with the final exam. The passing mark is 65.
Class Rank: Final ranking is based on final marks received in
grades 9-11 at the close of the 6th semester. Marks in
Physical Education are
not included in this computation. All seniors are included in the Class Ranking
regardless of
the programs or level of instruction. There is no provision for
weighting individual courses in the computations.
Interscholastic
athletics: BSHS teams compete in the
Suburban Conference in Section 2. Fall
sports include:
Cheerleading, Cross Country, Golf, Football, Soccer, Girls
Swimming, Girls Tennis, and Volleyball. Winter sports
include: Basketball,
Bowling, Boys Swimming, Wrestling. Spring sports include: Baseball, Lacrosse,
Softball, Boys
Tennis, and Track.
Non-competitive athletic opportunities
include: fitness intramurals, running club, rugby club and ski club.
