Our district has designated the MLA (Modern Language Association) format as the official format for research papers. Copies of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers  are available in the library.

The MLA format is widely used in schools, colleges and in publishing. Students will document their sources by using parenthetical citation and a works-cited list.

Why cite sources?

  • Give credit where credit is due! Acknowledging your sources tells the reader where your information and ideas came from.
  • Avoid plagiarism! Presenting other's ideas and information as your own can lead to loss of credit in school. Colleges and employers may impose severe penalties for plagiarism, including expulsion or loss of job.
  • Avoid copyright infringement!  Most published material, both in print and on the Internet, is legally protected by copyright laws. Some copying may be illegal, even if properly cited. Carefully read copyright statements before copying material. In some cases, it is appropriate to contact the author for permission before use.

What to cite?

  • All information or ideas that are not your own, including direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries.
  • Images, including photos, maps, charts, clipart, cartoons, audio or video clips, paintings, sculpture, advertisements
  • Interviews, lectures, speeches
  • If in doubt, cite!
