Social Studies

All students must earn four credits by passing Global History 9 and 10, US History, Economics, and Participation in Government.  In addition all students must take a NYS Regents exam in Global History and US History. See the chart on page 6 for the passing level that applies to your grade for a local diploma.

FULL YEAR COURSES

GLOBAL HISTORY 9

This is the first of four required units of social studies. It serves as a pre-requisite to Global History 10. Global History is designed to focus on the five social studies standards, common themes that recur across time and place and eight historical eras. The course stresses methods of social sciences as applied to a chronological study of history from ancient civilizations to the French Revolution.

AP WORLD HISTORY I

This is the first half of Advanced Placement World History. Students taking this course should have the intention of continuing on to the second half of AP World History in 10th grade. Course content includes Prehistory through the foundations of the Age of Revolutions, including the classical world; Byzantine and Islamic Civilizations; Africa, Asia, and the Americas; the Middle Ages; the Renaissance and Reformation; and the Age of Exploration. This course fulfills the requirement for Global History.

Students will be expected to read more extensively, complete more extensive and challenging writing assignments, do more individual study, and go into topics in greater depth than in Global History 9. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to complete a summer reading assignment.
 

GLOBAL HISTORY 10

Global History 10 is designed to focus on the five social studies standards, common themes that recur across time and place and eight historical eras. The course stresses methods of social science as applied to a chronological study of history from the French Revolution to the present. Students are required to take a Regents exam in Global History I and II at the end of the course.
 

AP WORLD HISTORY II

Recommended Achievement Levels: Successful completion of AP World History Prep (85 or better) or 9th grade teacher recommendation. Students who have excelled in Global History (95 or better) may be eligible for this course if they attend a summer seminar.

This course will make demands on students that are equivalent to those of an introductory college course. Course content focuses primarily on the past thousand years of the global experience from about 1000 C.E. to the present, highlighting changes in international frameworks and comparisons especially among major non-European societies. This Advanced Placement course prepares students for the AP World History examination. Students enrolled in this course are expected to take the AP World History exam. Students will also take the Regents Exam in Global History in June. This course fulfills the requirement for Global History 10. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to complete a summer reading program. Students entering the course from Global History 9 will be expected to attend a two week summer program.

UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT

Global History 10

United States History and Government is organized into seven historical units. This course will provide students with an understanding of the basic principles of the constitution, the cultural heritage of the United States that support our democracy and how individuals and groups have influenced public policy and change. All students will be required to take a Regents examination at the end of the course.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT – UNITED STATES HISTORY

Recommended Achievement Levels: Teacher recommendation. 90 or better in Global History and a 90 ore better on the Global History Regents. Completion of a summer reading assignment.

A college level study of United States history, designed to teach students to use primary and secondary source materials as well as other research tools. Students are expected to take the optional Advanced Placement examination made available at a cost to the student. Upon satisfactory completion of the A.P. exam students may receive college credit as determined by the institution of their choice. This course also prepares students for the U.S. History and Government Regents examination. Students enrolled in this course are expected to take the AP United States History exam. Students in this class are expected to complete a summer reading assignment.

 

ECONOMICS, THE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM, AND FINANCE

The purpose of this course is to offer a comprehensive survey of the basic economic components of the United States economy, the world economic system, and the relationships that these components share.

Students will become acquainted with, the vocabulary of economics and will explore such topics as: economic decision making, monetary policy, distribution of wealth, taxation, and the role of the United States in the world economy.
 

AP GOVERNMENT

Students will become acquainted with the variety of theoretical explanations for various political behaviors and outcomes. Students will become familiar with various groups, institutions, beliefs, and ideas that constitute United States government and politics.  This full year course integrates curriculum and instruction in Economics and AP Government. Students will fulfill New York State fourth year social studies requirements in Economics and Participation in Government. The concepts and themes of Economics will be integrated into the broader context of United States government and politics. Students will be expected to weave economic principles and practices into their analysis of the United States political system.
 

PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT

This course is designed to bring together all the Social Studies skills needed to become an effective citizen. The course includes a review of the structures of local and county governments. Selected course cases are analyzed. Students investigate their political style and positions on issues. This course emphasizes personal responsibility and individual initiative. Students will be given an opportunity to volunteer for a community service project which links government policy making with real life needs.

Psychology is a full year elective course, which is designed to make students think critically and imaginatively about the human mind and behavior. This is a college level course.

Students will learn the ways that Psychologists do research into human behavior. They will also examine important questions about the brain, the unconscious and conscious mind, individual differences, and how we change.

The student will be responsible for extensive reading. It is recommended that students review the text prior to enrollment. Students who have experienced success in Biology and Social Studies classes should do well in this course. Students are responsible for a year-long empirical research project based on a topic of their interest. This, combined with personal experience, problem solving and experimentation will provide each student with the opportunity to examine the workings of the human mind and behavior.

Students are expected to enroll in the University in the High School program. Upon receiving a grade of C or better in this course, students will be awarded three college credits by SUNY, Albany. These credits are accepted at most institutions of higher learning.

This course is recommended for students with a strong interest in social studies and for students who have demonstrated academic success in their previous social studies and biology courses. Students enrolled in this course are expected to be able to work independently on research assignments throughout the year.
 

SPECIAL TOPICS IN SOCIAL STUDIES

Special topics in social studies is a semester elective designed to investigate historical theme from multiple perspectives. This course will examine historical trends and issues through the lens of music, literature, film, sports and other popular cultural mediums. Students will be asked to research, analyze and interpret primary sources, including electronic media. This course is recommended for students with a strong interest in social studies.

Sociology is a semester elective designed to help students become familiar with the basic concepts principles, and practices of human society. The course is designed to increase student understanding of human behaviors, which we observe daily at home, in school, and in our community. The course will explore sociological foundations, the family, peer groups, mass media, social stratification, adolescence, racial and ethnic groups, deviance and social control. By incorporating a variety of software applications and an assortment of print and multi-media resources, students will develop a greater understanding and awareness of the social issues that impact the human experience.

Online Sociology is an alternative to the classroom version of Sociology. Students enrolled in this course will not meet with an instructor in a formal classroom setting, the bulk of the course will be completed using either school computers or a personal computer. The content of the course is the same as Sociology. This course is intended for students who are highly motivated and have demonstrated a high level of academic success in all of their classes. Students enrolled in this course must have exhibited a high-level of academic independence in high school.
