Physical Education
All students must complete two units of credit in Physical Education
over four years. All courses are taught by semester and all students
must enroll in Physical Education classes each semester of their high
school program.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9,10

All students are required to earn two credits in
Physical Education to meet requirements for graduation. Physical
Education is required each year a student is in attendance until
graduation.
The 9–10 physical education program provides students
with instruction in a diverse curriculum designed to expose students to
a variety of physical activities in the areas of team and individual
sports, personal health and fitness, aquatics, dance and lifetime
activities.
Some activities offered include: Adventure Education,
Archery, Badminton, Basketball, CPR and First Aid, Dance, Field Hockey,
Flag Football, Golf, Lifeguard Training, Orienteering, Recreational
Games, Speedball, Soccer, Softball, Swim for Fitness, Tennis, Track and
Field, Volleyball, and Weight Training.
In addition to the required Physical Education
program students may elect to participate in intramurals and
inter-scholastic athletics. These extracurricular athletic activities
provide the student with rich opportunities for leadership,
self-realization, human relationships and civic responsibility

activities, lifetime wellness, lifetime activities, and swimming.
Activities are included to provide students with opportunities to
develop strong and healthy bodies, safety, and to acquire knowledge,
interests, and attitudes about themselves and others through decision
making, leading, following, respect for authority, and cooperation.
Some activities offered include: Adventure Education,
Archery, Badminton, Basketball, CPR and First Aid, Dance, Field Hockey,
Flag Football, Golf, Lifeguard Training, Orienteering, Recreational
Games, Speedball, Soccer, Softball, Swim for Fitness, Tennis, Track and
Field, Volleyball, and Weight Training.
In addition to the required Physical Education
program students may elect to participate in intramurals and

Physical Education program at the Ballston Spa High School. These
extracurricular athletic activities provide the student with rich
opportunities for leadership, self-realization, human relationships and
civic responsibility.
PE 9-12 will be offered in summer school.

GUARD START
GRADE ....................

PERIODS .................... Two per week
PREREQUISITE .................. Must pass physical skills test
This course will teach water safety and the duties and
responsibilities of a lifeguard. However,
this course will not certify anyone to
be a lifeguard. It will
build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills in preparation for
the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course. Upon completion and when
turning 15 years of age, participants will be prepared to enroll in the
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course.
AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFE GUARD TRAINING
GRADE ........
Must be 15 years of age
CREDIT ................................ 1⁄4 Unit
PERIODS .................... Two per week
PREREQUISITE ...... Must successfully complete a pre-course skills
test
FINAL EXAM .......... Achieve 80% on written exam and successfully
complete practical skills test
This course includes three components: Lifeguard Training
(including First Aid), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and a Waterfront
Life guarding Module. Each component has a written and practical exam and
each has a card for successful completion. |
WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR

Activities required for WSI certificate
This course follows the American Red Cross curriculum for
Water Safety Instruction. This includes both academic instruction and
practical skill development. Upon successful completion of the WSI (Water
Safety Instructors) Course you are qualified to teach all levels of the
Infant and Preschool aquatics program (IPAP) and Learn to Swim program:
Levels 1-7, the Water Safety Course, the Community Water Safety Course, and
the Water Safety Instructor Aide Course.
Successful completion of this course will require the
student to purchase the teaching materials necessary for utilization of the
certification in the programs identified above. Teaching materials include;
5 manuals, safety posters, and a CD-Rom. Estimated cost for all materials is
$75.
BASIC ATHLETIC TRAINING
GRADE ..................................
11 and 12(select sophomores only)
CREDIT .......................1⁄4 Unit per semester
PERIODS ...........................Two per week
PREREQUISITE ..........Regents Biology and 85% in PE 9/10
Consideration for this class will be based on class rank,
teacher recommendations, and interviews. The student must have completed
Regents Biology and PE 9/10 with a minimum grade of 85%, and be enrolled in
an additional science course.
This course will include topics on history and
development of sports medicine, training room operations, basic first-aid,
and taping and wrapping of injuries. There will be a special topics unit
covering heat illness, hypothermia and shock, as well as principles of
anatomy, kinesiology and physiology. Sport psychology and evaluation of
common athletic injuries will also be discussed. Students will also be
required to assist with athletic training duties in the training room and
after school with team events.
