This page
is designed to provide you with information about procedures and
practices that are part of day-to-day life at BSHS. Do not hesitate to
ask your teachers, counselor, or the deans if you have additional
questions.
What
resources are available if you have difficulty in a class?
1. You must
purchase an agenda when you enter BSHS. Make sure you USE it. The most
effective formula for success in high school is to complete assignments
on time and study on a regular basis. Your agenda will help you record assignments
and extra-curricular commitments. It also contains useful information
about study tips, school policies, and a section for teachers to sign
study hall passes.
2. Probably
the best resource is to ask your teacher for help. This can be done
after school but check with your teacher first to be sure he/she is available
on the date you would like to stay. You can also see if your teacher is
free at a time when you have a study hall. The teacher can give you a
pre-signed pass to sign out of your study hall.
3.
If you need more assistance, see you counselor. Although we do not allow
students to drop classes, he/she may have some suggestions for other
options to help you succeed in your classes.
4. The
National Honor Society (NHS) coordinates a Peer Tutoring Program.
Students interested in getting help from an honor student should
pick up and return forms in the main office. These forms must be
completed by students, not teachers or parents. You must list the
subject in which you need help on the form. An NHS representative will
assign a member of NHS to work with you at a specific date and time. The
teacher of the class in which you are having difficulty
will give you
the name of your tutor and meeting place. You are obliged to attend
these sessions and it is your responsibility to inform the NHS member if
you cannot attend.
What is
a gold card?
The Gold
Card is a picture ID issued after every report card to students
who have achieved an appropriate responsibility rating. Each teacher
rates every student and ratings are averaged to determine your score.
You cannot be eligible for a Gold Card until you have completed on full
quarter at BSHS.
Achievement
of a Gold Card entitles you to privileges at BSHS, like reduced
admission to sports activities, and it substitutes for hall passes. It
also entitles you to discounts at local businesses like Dunkin Donuts,
"Pizza, Etc.", and many more.
What is
Peer Mediation?
Peer
Mediation is a process which allows students to work out conflicts in a
controlled setting. If you have a problem with another student, contact
your counselor or a dean. A student mediator will contact the
other student and moderate a meeting between the students involved. Both
parties must agree to the meeting.
How can
I apply for free or reduced price meals?
The
secretary in the Assistant Principal's office will give you a form for
your parent/guardian to fill out and return.
Where do
I go for Working Papers?
Working
Papers are available from the guidance office. A physical examination is
required which you may schedule with your own physician or have for free
at Dr. Gelman's office in Ballston Spa beginning on July 1, 2001. You
must call Dr. Gelman's office (885-3755) for an appointment. When
you call, tell them that you need a working paper physical and that you
are a student at BSHS. Be sure to take the physical form with you. It
must be signed by a doctor.
What
should you do if you are harassed by another student or a teacher?
The
Ballston Spa Central School District recognizes that all forms of harassment,
including sexual harassment, can have a tremendous impact on an
individual's performance and physical and emotional health. Any such harassment
will not be tolerated.
If you feel
that you have been subjected to harassment, report the alleged
misconduct immediately to the assistant principal, or to your teacher
who will bring the complaint to the assistant principal, so that the
complaint can be investigated and the appropriate corrective action may
be taken at once. Complaints can be made through an informal meeting
with an administrator or through a formal written document. The investigation
will be confidential and you will be notified of the result. Retaliation
is not allowed.
A complete
list of school activities is included in your student folder or
click
here. To join an
activity, contact the advisor or listen to morning announcements for the
date, place and time of meetings. You may also join by attending a
meeting.
Each class
elects officers each year to run fund raisers and class activities. Your
senior prom will be subsidized by these activities. All students are
invited to participate. Class officers are also members of the student
government (CSL). All positions are elected annually so interested
students may become involved throughout their high school career.
A complete
list of sports and the coach of each is available in the Guidance Office
or the Main Office. In addition, dates and times of events related to
interscholastic sports are located on our website.

must:
1. Sign up

participation packet from the nurse.
2. Return
the signed parental approval for interscholastic sports to the
nurse.
3. Have a
current sports physical on file with the nurse (Blue Card). A physical
completed after June 1 is good for the entire year. Free sports
physicals are offered during the first week of June only. All students
who wish to enter sports after that time must see their own physician
for a physical.
New students can go to their own doctor or have a free physical a Dr.
Gelman's office in Ballston Spa. Call 885-3755 for an appointment. Be
sure to take the blue physical card with you. It must be signed by a
doctor.
4. Have a
parent/guardian complete and sign the white "Interval Health
History" card and return it to the nurse.
5. NO ONE
CAN PARTICIPATE IN ANY INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORT UNTIL THE ABOVE HAS BEEN
COMPLETE AND RETURNED TO THE NURSE.
6. Attend
tryouts for the sport you are interested in. See the
school
sports calendar
for
dates and times, or call the school at 884-7150.
