Fine Arts - Music

Satisfactory completion of one credit in Musical Performance or Music in Our Lives may be used to meet the one credit of Art or Music required of all students to meet graduation requirements as prescribed by the NYS Education Department. Students may substitute a 5 unit sequence in music which must include Music Theory and Music History and Literature for the Foreign Language requirement of the Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation.

MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE

This course will help develop an awareness, a sensitivity, and an appreciation of many styles of music from all time periods and countries. Every student pursuing this course of study will be involved in each of the following areas: Reading, Writing, Listening, Performing (including singing), and Composing. All types of music will be explored, and the emphasis will be on developing each student’s listening skills.
 

MUSIC IN OUR LIVES

Music In Our Lives is a high school level general music course designed for students who have a strong interest in many aspects of music but do not have music reading skills. It is taught with a hands-on approach in which students learn by doing, and stresses the development of listening skills. The primary objectives are learning to listen intelligently to music performed by a variety of musical ensembles  in both western and non-western styles; to perform music at a recreational level on a social, electronic or orchestral instrument or voice; to compose, organize, or arrange music in some medium; to use basic library and computer resources for research; and to plan, develop, and present an in-depth special interest project. This course fulfills the one Arts Credit graduation requirement, but does not count toward a five-unit music major sequence.
 

MUSIC THEORY

PREREQUISITE ................ Current or previous enrollment in Band, Chorus, or Orchestra

This course teaches the mechanics of music. It will help a good performer become a better musician. For those who do not perform on an instrument but have a little knowledge of music, it will help them to become more intelligent listeners as well as increase their musicianship. Activities to be included are dictation, sight-singing, keyboard skills, conducting, composition, orchestration, form and analysis, and the study of music history.

 

STRING ORCHESTRA

GRADE ........................ 9, 10, 11, 12

FINAL EVALUATION ...... Attendance and Performance
PREREQUISITE ........ Previous playing experience (four years recommended), or audition. Attendance at one weekly lesson is required. Attendance and participation at concerts and performances.

The String Orchestra is open to students with previous experience playing in orchestra and continuing instruction on violin, viola, cello or string bass. A four-year background in string playing is recommended. Students new to the school district, or those not meeting the above recommendation will need to audition for the orchestra director to be accepted into the ensemble. Several concerts are scheduled throughout the year. Attendance at one weekly lesson is required. Participation at performances during the year is mandatory.

SYMPHONIC BAND

GRADE ........................ 9, 10, 11, 12

FINAL EVALUATION...... Performance and portfolio assessment

This course is designed for students who have had ongoing instruction on traditional concert band instruments. They must have at least three years of instruction. Participating in performances and activities throughout the year is required. Attendance at one (1) weekly pull out lesson is required.
 

WIND ENSEMBLE

GRADE ............................ 10, 11, 12

FINAL EVALUATION...... Performance and portfolio assessment
PREREQUISITE .............. 3 years prior experience on the instrument, 1 Year of Symphonic Band and an audition

The BSHS Wind Ensemble is a group designed for the dedicated band student. Registration in this group is based on a yearly audition, and all members must audition every year. Music is performed at NYSSMA levels 5 and 6. Individual practice and sectional rehearsals are expected. Auditions are held in the early part of second semester. Materials for the audition are available ahead of time for independent preparation. Sections not filled by audition will be filled at the discretion of the director. Attendance at one (1) weekly pull out lesson is required.
 

JAZZ BAND

GRADE ........................ 9, 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE ............ Audition and ability to read written music notation

This ensemble is for students who are interested in learning and performing in the jazz style. Students will have experience in different styles, and with improvisation. Preference will be given to students who have experience performing on traditional Jazz Band instruments such as Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass, Guitar, Drum Set, and Piano. Students on wind instruments will be required to perform with Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band. Attendance at one (1) weekly pull out lesson is required.
 

 

WOMEN'S CHOIR

GRADE ........................ 9, 10, 11, 12
CREDIT .................................. 1 Unit
FINAL EVALUATION ...... Attendance and Performance

This ensemble will concentrate on literature written and arranged for the treble voices from Renaissance to Rock and Broadway. Proper vocal technique, basic music theory, and sight singing are emphasized and taught to those who have little or no experience. Participation in concerts (approx. 3) is part of the course requirement. Students are evaluated on sight-reading and singing every quarter.
 

CONCERT CHOIR

GRADE ...... 10, 11, 12 and gr. 9 boys
CREDIT .................................. 1 Unit
FINAL EVALUATION ...... Attendance and Performance

3-4 mixed part music of the last six centuries is sung, but with a definite slant towards our own times. Basic sight reading ability, good vocal technique, and basic music theory skills are needed. Participating in concerts is part of the course requirement. Students are evaluated on sight-reading and singing every quarter.
 

SELECT CHORUS

GRADE ............................ 10, 11, 12
CREDIT .................................. 1 Unit
FINAL EVALUATION ...... Attendance and Performance
PREREQUISITE.... One year of Chorus or Concert Choir, Audition

About 20 students will be chosen through a Spring audition for membership in the Select Chorus. Activities will include participation in approximately four concerts per year, the possibility of outside performances and instruction in voice techniques. Students are evaluated on sight-reading and singing every quarter.
 

APPLIED MUSIC

GRADE ........................ 9, 10, 11, 12
CREDIT.................... 1⁄2 Unit Pass/Fail
FINAL EVALUATION .............. Private teacher’s grade quarterly and an end-of-the-year examination OR participation in a NYSSMA Spring Competition Festival
PREREQUISITE.. At least 1 year in the branch of Applied Music in which credit is desired

Any student studying with a private music teacher outside of school at least once a week, for a minimum of 30 minutes, 36 weeks a year, may earn school credit. Students who register for this course must obtain the proper forms from a high school music teacher during the first month of school. This course does NOT satisfy the one unit graduation requirement.

 

 

Fine Arts - Theatre

Successful completion of Introduction to Theatre may be used to meet the one credit in Art or Music required of all students to meet the graduation requirements by the NYS Education Department. Students completing a five unit sequence in Fine Arts may use Introduction to Theatre as part of that sequence. Students may substitute a five unit sequence in Fine Arts for the Foreign Language requirement of a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation.

*It’s important to remember that your communication skills will help you throughout your entire life. Take the time now to perfect them. Taking a theatre course is helpful in developing these communication skills through verbal language as well body language. You can learn how to best present yourself and express yourself!
 

INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE

This year-long course will include study and practical application of performance skills and character development, as well as study of scenic, costume, and lighting design. Directing, stage managing and acting will also be studied and speakers in many of these fields will act as resources for skill development. Dramatic criticism and playwriting will also play a major role in this course.

 

INTRODUCTION TO ACTING

GRADE ........................................ 11, 12

PREREQUISITE.... Introduction to Theatre

This year long course will explore the many methods of acting. Students will refine communication skills through verbal Language as well as body language. History of acting and different types of literature are included in this performance-based class.
