REQUIREMENTS
NOTE:
The Regents Competency Test safety
net for students with disabilities will continue to be available for
students entering grade 9 prior to September 2010. Students using the
safety net will receive a local diploma. The low-option of scoring
between 55-64 on the required Regents exams to earn a local diploma will
continue to be available for students with disabilities. The safety net
allows students with disabilities who do not pass all Regents
examinations the opportunity to meet the graduation requirements for a
local diploma by passing Regents Competency Tests (RCTs). Student must
take the required examinations; if they do not meet the passing standard
they are eligible to take the subject specific RCT. Students may take
the RCT before and/or after they have sat for the Regents exam. In order
to graduate, students using the safety net must earn credits in all
courses required for a local or Regents diploma.

RESOURCE ROOM
This service is provided to special education students in
groups of 5 students or less. Instruction meets the students’ various needs
and provides support in areas of weakness. Students receiving resource room
service are working on reading, writing and math skills in addition to
organizational skills and time management which address IEP goals and
objectives. Students in this program are working toward a local or Regents
diploma.
CONSULTANT SERVICES DIRECT/INDIRECT
These services are provided to students and their
teachers within the regular education program. Services are administered
either directly to the student by a special education teacher or indirectly
through the cooperative work between a special education and regular
education teachers. The student receives approximately 120 minutes of
service per week.
CONNECTIONS PROGRAM
This service is provided to assist students who have been
identified by the Committee of Special Education as being in need of
intensive social skill instruction. It is a small setting that consists of a
maximum of 5 students, a special education teacher, and a teaching
assistant. This program is designed to assist students in their academic
classes as well as to foster independence, communicate effectively with
others, advocate for themselves, and learn appropriate social skills in a
variety of settings. Students in this program are working to achieve a
Regents or local diploma. |
COLLABORATIVE CLASSES
15:1:1 English
15:1:1 Social Studies
15:1:1 Math
15:1:1 Science
These classes are co-taught by a content area teacher and a
special education teacher. These programs provide special education services
to students with various classifications ranging from Learning Disabled to
Multiply Disabled. Students in this program are working toward a local or
Regents Diploma.
STRIVE
This 8:1:1 service is comprised of eight students a
teacher and a teaching assistant. Students have emotional/behavioral issues
interfering with their education. Many of these students are mainstreamed
into general education classes. Students in this program are working toward
a local, Regents or IEP Diploma.
BRIDGES
This service is provided to students with developmental
disabilities. The curriculum consists of daily living/ functional skills
with a community component. Students in this program are working toward and
IEP Diploma.
