Library Student User's Guide
- Where is the library?
The library is on the first floor, on the cross corridor between the
English and Social Studies wings.
- When may I go to the library?
From study hall: Students report to study hall, and then sign out to
the library with the study hall teacher's permission. Most study hall teachers
have students take turns. Sign-in sheets are at the circulation desk- each
student signs the sheet with their study hall teacher's name at the top. If
they complete their library work more than ten minutes before the end of the
block, students may sign out and return to study hall. NOTE: Students who
have materials more than 30 days overdue must return the overdues before
coming to the library from Study Hall. They may, however use the library
during the after school hours.
From class: Students may also come to the library with a class. Often
teachers will reserve the library classroom, or they may reserve tables
nearest the resources that the class will be using.
Occasionally teachers may send students from class, alone or in small groups,
to the library during class time. They will either give the student a pass, or
sign his/her agenda. There is a separate sign-in sheet for students "Not from
Study Hall".
From lunch: On some days students may come to the library from lunch. A
pass from the Assistant Principal or Dean is required to leave the cafeteria
to go to the library. Students from lunch remain in the library until the end
of their lunchtime.
Before or after school: The library is open before school, from 7:15
AM-7:30 AM, and after school on Tuesday & Thursday, from 2:30 PM-3:15 PM.
- How is the library organized?
Each item is assigned a call number. Call numbers have 3 parts, and
may consist of all letters.
The 1st part is the Collection Code, which indicates the section of the
library that the item belongs in. The collection codes that we use are:
| Audio |

| B |
Biography |
| CC |
Colleges and Careers |
| CD |
Compact disks |
| CSW |
Computer
Software |

If no collection code appears in the call number, then the item is in the main
section of the library, the non-fiction section.
The 2nd part of the call number is the classification number, based on the
Dewey Decimal
System. Most books or other resources are assigned a number that
represents the subject of the book. Books are arranged in numerical order. Books of
fiction, short stories and biographies are not assigned classification
numbers.
The 3rd part is called the Cutter, usually the first 3 letters of the
author's last name. If 2 or more items in a collection have the same
classification number, they are arranged alphabetically by the Cutter.

- How can I borrow materials from the
library?
Students may borrow 3 items at a time. Take the items to the circulation
desk, and tell the librarian your name. Most items are lent for 2 weeks. If
more time is needed, ask to have the item renewed for another 2 weeks. If it's
more than 30 days overdue, the book must be present to renew.
- What if I don't return it on time?
Overdue reminder notes are sent at the beginning of each month, by way of
study hall teachers.
- What if I lost it or it was damaged?
Students who lose/damage library materials are expected to pay for a replacement.
If you lose something you borrowed, please see a librarian as soon as possible
to arrange to replace it.
