  • MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK DURING THE SPRING SEMESTER OF SCHOOL YEAR; MAY RESULT IN FULL TIME SUMMER POSITION.

Sons of the American Revolution, George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest: This student contest is based on an original researched topic related to the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Scholastic Art and Writing Awards: Scholarships are available for students who present art, photography, and/or writing portfolios. Works are judged on originality, technical proficiency, and the emergence of an authentic vision or voice. Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship: This scholarship is for seniors who have at least a 90 average, are active in school and community activities, recognized as leaders and need financial assistance. The American Legion New York Oratorical Contest: Each year an Oratorical contest is sponsored by the Department of New York and Legion Posts throughout the state. The Oratorical contest provides an opportunity for students to improve their knowledge of the Constitution and ideals of the United States while vying for scholarships. Beginning at the local Post level, elevating through the County, District and Zone competition, the five final Zone winners compete at the Department level. The winner of this contest then competes at the National Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Zone awards are as follows: First place advances to Department level contest; Second place receives a $1,500 savings bond; Third place, a $1,000 savings bond; and Fourth place, also a $1,000 savings bond.

The American Legion Department of New York offers winners competing in the Department finals scholarships only in the following amounts: $6,000 for First; $4,000 for Second; $2,500 for Third; $2,000 for Fourth and Fifth places. Payments are made directly to your college and are awarded over a four-year period. The winner of this contest is invited to attend the Annual Department Convention. Empire State Potato Growers Inc. Scholarship: Applicant must be a NYS resident, pursing an agricultural-related area of undergraduate study (i.e. Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Crop & Soil Sciences, Entomology, Food Sciences, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Agricultural Economics) at a college in New York State. Scholarship will be awarded based on area of study, academic achievement, and leadership abilities. It will be provided at the rate of $500 per academic year, for up to 4 consecutive years of undergraduate education. AT&T and BBB Science and Technology Scholarship: This scholarship is for high school seniors who plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in the fields of technology or science. BBB Student of Integrity Award: This scholarship is for high school seniors who best exemplify the ethical standards sat forth by BBB and its members. New York State PTA – The NYS PTA Jenkins Memorial Scholarship for Teacher Education: Scholarship award of $3,000 is designated to assist outstanding students in preparing for the teaching profession. New York State Water Environment Association, Inc. (NYWEA): Scholarships are awarded to students who plan on enrolling in an environmentally related program of study at a four-year college or university. TCT Federal Credit Union Scholarship: This scholarship is an award of either $500 or $1,000. Applicants must be college bound high school seniors and credit union members. SEFCU Federal Credit Union Scholarship: This scholarship is an award of either $500 or $1,000. Applicants must be planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college for the first time in fall 2009 and be a credit union member. Applicant wil be judged on academic achievement, extracurricular and community activities and the quality of a written essay. McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship: Available to all high school seniors who plan on attending a four year college and have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school. BURGER KING® Scholars Program:  BURGER KING Scholars awards assist students who work part-time and excel academically. DAR Scholarships: The NSDAR awards multiple scholarships to students showing dedication to the pursuit of an undergraduate degree in one of the following areas: history, political science, economics, government or nursing. American Legion Auxiliary Girl Scout Achievement Award: $1,000 scholarship awarded to a high school senior who has with a Girl Scout Gold award and has demonstrated practical citizenship in a religious institution, school, Girl Scouting and community. KFC Colonel’s Scholar Program: This scholarship is for high school seniors who demonstrate entrepreneurial drive, strong perseverance, financial need and plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited public in-state institution. The National Commission for Cooperative Education: This scholarship program will offer 200 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 for a total renewable value of $5,000,000. These will be awarded to high school seniors who plan to participate in college cooperative education at one of the NCCE Partner Colleges and Universities. Women in Physical Education in New York State – Dorothy Deitz Memorial Scholarship: These scholarships will be granted to three deserving female students that plan on majoring in Physical Education. Applicants will be judged on character, academic achievement, physical education competence, participation in athletics, qualities of leadership and financial need. American Legion Auxiliary National President’s Scholarship: The National President’s scholarships are awarded to children of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during the eligibility dates for The American Legion. One $2,500 scholarship, one $2,000 scholarship, and one $1,000 scholarship will be awarded in each division. Fifteen outstanding students will be awarded a total of $27,500 to further their higher education. The applicant must complete 50 hours of community service during his/her high school years to be eligible for one of these scholarships. American Legion Auxiliary Raymond T. Wellington Jr. Memorial Scholarship: This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a senior or graduate who plans on further education and is a daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, son, grandson, or great-grandson of veterans who served in the Armed forces during WWI, WWII, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, Grenada/Lebanon, Panama, and the Persian Gulf. Selection for this award is based on character, volunteer involvement, Americanism, leadership, financial need and scholarship as well as an autobiographical essay on the applicant’s interests, experiences and long term plans and goals.  Deadline: March 1, 2009

American Legion Auxiliary Past President’s Parley Scholarship in Medical Field: There will be three scholarships awarded in the amount of $1,500 each. Applicants must be a daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, son, grandson, or great-grandson of veterans who served in the Armed forces during WWI, WWII, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, Grenada/Lebanon, Panama, and the Persian Gulf and planning on pursuing the medical field. Selection will be made based on need, character, Americanism, leadership and scholarship, as well as a personal essay on “Why I selected the medical field.”  Deadline: March 1, 2009

Applicants will be judged on character, leadership, Americanism, community involvement, financial need and scholarship. A personal essay is required on the applicant’s goals for the future and how he or she hopes to use talent and education to help others.  Deadline: March 1, 2009

American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students: Applicants for this award must be non-traditional students returning to the classroom after some period of time his or her formal education was interrupted or who is just beginning his or her education at a later point in life. All applicants must be members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of the American Legion. Selection will be based on need, scholastic achievement, character and leadership, and initiative and goals. Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Deadline: March 1, 2009

VFW Scout of the Year Scholarship: This program provides a $5,000 award to an outstanding scout who is the recipient of a Boy Scout Eagle Award, a Venture Scouting Silver Award or a Sea Scout Quartermaster Award and has demonstrated practical citizenship in school, scouting and the community. American Legion Auxiliary Spirit of Youth Scholarship: One Junior member in each division will receive a scholarship valued at $1,000 per year for four years (total $4,000). The applicant must have held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the immediate past three years, currently hold a 2008 membership card, and continue to maintain her membership throughout the four-year scholarship period. Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Scholarship: The SAMMY award, sponsored by the National Milk Mustache "got milk?" Essays will be judged on style and content. Prizes range from 175 semifinalist $50 awards to one first prize $10,000 award. Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation Scholarship: To provide financial assistance to young women who are pursuing college degrees in the study of languages, or who are studying in a foreign country as enrichment for their college program; and, to encourage Girl Scout staff training that incorporates the study of language leading to a better understanding of cultural differences. Albany Medical Center Scholarship Program: This program is designed to assist students in earning degrees in several health care fields (Cardiovascular Technician, Sonography, Pharmacy, Nursing, etc…) at area colleges. The student is required to contract a work commitment at Albany Medical Center in order to receive the award. Award amounts range from $1,400 to $12,000 and work commitments range from 12 to 36 months.
