All students must earn one unit of high school credit by either passing the second language proficiency exam at the end of grade 8 or successfully completing a ninth grade course of study for both a Local or Regents Diploma. For a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation two additional credits in foreign language plus a score of at least 65% on the Comprehensive Regents Examination is required, or students may substitute a 5-unit sequence in Art, Music or Career Technical Education for the additional foreign language requirement.

This course will be made available only to those students who did not achieve at least a 65 on the SLP exam at the end of grade 8. In this course students will relearn the basic vocabulary, idioms, and grammar structures found in checkpoint A of the NYS learning standards. Upon successful completion of Language 9, students will earn one unit of Foreign Language credit required for graduation from high school.
 

FRENCH – LEVEL 2

French 2 advances the student to the intermediate level of language acquisition. The study of grammar structures, vocabulary and idioms becomes more intensive in this course. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in order to progress to the next level. The study of French culture and aspects of everyday life is continued.
 

FRENCH – LEVEL 3

GRADE ............................ 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE ........ Passing grade in French 2 and teacher recommendation

In the third year the study of grammar structures, vocabulary and idioms progresses to a more sophisticated level. Emphasis is on conversation, compositions, authentic readings, written assignments and oral reports of more advanced content.   Students must demonstrate competency in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in order to be successful on the New York State Regents exam in June. The study of geography, culture and lifestyles of French speaking countries is continued.

 

FRENCH – LEVEL 4 - UHS*

PREREQUISITE...... Final class average of 90% or better in French 3, 90% or better on Regents exam and teacher recommendation

The fourth year of French is taught at an introductory college level. Emphasis is on students’ oral participation, in-depth writing assignments, reading and discussion of literary works, exposure to authentic movies, and the continued study of the culture and lifestyles of French speaking countries. Students are expected to enroll in the University in the High School French program of studies. Interested, eligible students will complete a UHS application and submit the tuition payment directly to UAlbany. The curriculum and grades are determined by the high school teacher. Upon receiving a passing grade, students will be awarded 4 college credits per course by UAlbany. These credits are accepted at most institutions of higher learning. Official transcripts will be made available to the student’s college of choice.
