Family and Consumer Sciences

Students may substitute a five unit sequence in Family and Consumer Sciences for the Foreign Language requirement of a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation. Satisfactory completion of Interior Design (1/2 credit) AND Fashion, Textiles, and Design (1/2 credit) may be used to meet the one credit in Art and Music required of all students to meet graduation requirements.
 

CORE LEVEL COURSES

FOOD AND NUTRITION

FINAL EXAMINATION .. School exam

This course will offer a hands-on approach to exploring topics related to food preparation and nutrition.  Content includes meal planning, food purchasing, food preparation and service, nutrition, physical fitness and career opportunities. Special units include visiting chefs and an on-site visit of a professional food preparation site.
 

HUMAN RELATIONS

This course focuses on how we relate to others and social issues of interest to the class. Human Relations will allow students an opportunity to explore challenges and choices in life and careers in Human Services.

INTERIOR DESIGN

FINAL EXAMINATION .. School exam

This course is designed to allow the exploration of many areas related to interior design. Students will experiment with the principles and elements of design. Projects will focus on the functional aspects of housing including design and selection. This course is strongly recommended for students considering careers in interior design, fashion merchandising and fashion design.

 

FASHION TEXTILES AND DESIGN

GRADE ............................ 10, 11, 12
CREDIT ................................ 1⁄2 Unit
FINAL EXAMINATION .. School exam

This course allows students to explore many aspects of fashion from cultural and historical perspectives to current trends and fashion careers. Students will select from a variety of projects to fulfill course requirements. Clothing construction is a possibility - but not a requirement.

 

CONCENTRATION LEVEL COURSES (ADVANCED)

CHILD DEVELOPMENT I

This course centers on the vast number of choices individuals make in relation to parenting. Emphasis is placed on the process of child development from prenatal development to birth and through age one. Class discussion, small group work, projects, and media presentations are used to increase student understanding of child development and parenting and the careers available in areas of child development.
 

CHILD DEVELOPMENT II

GRADE ............................ 10, 11, 12
CREDIT ................................ 1⁄2 Unit
FINAL EXAMINATION ............ School

This course concentrates on the physical, emotional, social and cognitive development of children. Daily care, guidance, discipline, and other parenting, care-giver, and social responsibilities are studied and skills practiced in a laboratory situation with with pre-school aged children. Career opportunities in child development areas will also be explored.

Food Preparation and Nutrition I

This course teaches advanced food preparation techniques, the importance of food appearance and presentation, and the use of specialized equipment. Careers in food photography, food journalism, and food styling are explored.
